Understanding Active Health Education
It is important for educators to understand these key concepts to ensure that students are getting the proper health and wellness education. It is important for students to learn how to stay healthy so that when they grow up they can implement these skills.
Key Issues in Youth Physical Activity
Sport-centric approach: Although this approach is effective for some; like me for example, I thrived in sport-centric environments. However some people do not feel as confident with this type of approach as it can be quite competition based. I think that changing to a more well rounded approach including more inclusive activities where all kids can participate and enjoy would be more effective as well. Broaden students’ understanding around the benefits of physical activity and the correlation between physical activity to your mental wellbeing. Active kids are happy kids. Not just doing physical education but also learning about the importance. We discuss the lack of resources and people to teach physical education yet if we had more education on the subject I think it would be different. Here is a link to a ted talk that discusses the connection between physical activity and the brain. Maybe if our educators were more well versed and knowledgeable about the importance of physical education we could understand that when students are regularly active they will start to perform better in school as well. Wendy Suzuki Neuroscientist said that physical activity can help with “Better mood, Better Energy, Better memory, better attention.”
The Role of Sedentary Behaviour in Youth Health
When I went to elementary school the only screen time I was getting was in the computer lab, where we learned how to type. Now it seems as though the majority of classes and lessons are taught on some sort of screen. I think that with the introduction of technology educators started prioritizing the use of technology to limit the waste of paper and supplies which makes sense but I do not think people understood how technology would take over our lives and the lives of students. As we have discussed in our classes students spend more time on their devices than playing and learning to connect with other students and partake in physical activities. I think it is important to incorporate more hands-on learning activities, where students can be involved and not distracted by playing games. Although this is quite a controversial topic, I think that in some cases it is necessary. I think it is becoming more and more common for students to have their phones taken away in classes. This creates less distractions and forces students to get used to studying without phones to distract them.
